P/T - Collections and Exhibit Coordinator, Whaling Museum (NY)

The Whaling Museum & Education Center in Cold Spring Harbor, NY is seeking a Collections and Exhibit Coordinator.





The primary responsibility of the Coordinator is ensuring the overall safety, maintenance, and documentation of the Museum’s collection.
 

This part-time position is generally 20 hours a week.
 

This position begins in the summer of 2017.
 

Major duties include:

 Maintain the database of accurate and thorough collection records and digital image library
 Receive, prepare, and catalog new acquisitions
 Organize the movement of collections objects for both educational initiatives and exhibits
 Supervise and/or train volunteers and interns working on collections-based projects
 Oversee monitoring of environmental conditions
 Assist in preparing proposals and grant applications for collections-oriented projects
 Oversee logistics of loans and correspondence
 Monitor the condition and upkeep of museum exhibits
 Develop and produce content and interpretation for existing and new exhibits, including signage; recommend and oversee updates or upgrades
 Serve as staff liaison to outside institutions
 Support and supervise research on collection items, both for staff and outside researchers
 Assistance in daily running of museum, as needed
 Other duties requested by the Executive Director


Qualifications:
 

 Bachelor’s degree in appropriate field of study; Master’s preferred
 Knowledge of best practices in collections policies and procedures, including conservation, object handling, and archival management
 Knowledge of innovative and education-centered museum exhibit development based on best current practices and methodologies
 Experience working with historic collections
 Knowledge of nomenclature and metadata standards for cataloguing
 Proficiency with PastPerfect and MS Office
 Knowledge of local maritime history
 Exceptional writing skills and careful proofreading
 Self-starter and self-driven; high ethical standards; positive, can-do approach
 Excellent organizational skills; attention to detail; ability to manage multiple projects
 Ability to cheerfully communicate up-to-date museum standards with staff and other professionals
 Creative thinker with crafty, do-it-yourself ideas
 Familiarity with photography
 Ability to work independently or as part of group
 Valid driver’s license
 

Also required is occasional travel and the ability to lift 40 pounds. This at-will position reports to and is supervised by the Executive Director.
