Senior Research Analyst, Dentons – NY

Dentons is currently recruiting for a Senior Research Analyst with tax, corporate and capital markets industry expertise. This position will be based in our New York office. This position performs industry sector oriented research, and other legal matter, business and competitive intelligence research support as needed by the Department. The primary clients served are the Firm’s lawyers, practice leaders, Marketing Business Development and Leadership Team. The individual provides input to the Research and Information Services Department’s business strategy development, purchasing decisions associated with the industry sectors supported, and assists with allocation of expenses associated with research staff and subscription expenses to benefiting practices areas.

Responsibilities

  • Delivers complex business and legal research requests for Tax, Corporate and Capital Markets practice sectors.
  • Serves as an effective team member in assigned industry sector practice groups, attending practice meetings, and regularly meeting with group leadership and Marketing business development liaisons.
  • Conducts other legal matter, business and competitive intelligence research support as needed by the Department.
  • Produces professionally structured research summaries, abstracts and analysis documents and associated data as requested by clients.
  • Assists lawyers, professionals and support staff in conducting research using online and other research materials and technologies available at the Firm.
  • Creates course materials, reference guides and effectively instructs lawyers, professionals and staff in access and use of electronic research resources.
  • Works with practice groups to manage electronic and print collection needs, aligned to established expense budgets and cost recovery objectives.
  • Assists with administrative allocation of research staff and subscription expenses to benefiting practices areas.
  • Collaborates with Department leaders in the scheduling of research services to meet internal client support expectations. Supports dynamic adjustments of research requests with available resources due to changing services demand or talent availability – to assure services commitments are met, workloads are balanced among peers and work derived career enrichment is achieved.
  • Provides status reports and other updates to Research and Information Services leadership, on support rendered and services needs of industry sector practice groups.
  • Provides input to the Department’s business strategy development, and purchasing decisions associated with the industry sectors supported.
  • Collaborates with peers and Department leadership in identifying and implementing changes in services offered to the firm, and processes used to deliver services, to assure Research and Information Services remain aligned with changes in Firm business needs.
  • Identifies new internal clients and service value delivery opportunities.
  • Prepares services and resources awareness communications for internal clients, and completes assigned intranet Portal content updates.
  • Shares expertise, resources awareness and service delivery best practices and innovation concepts with Department peers.
  • Conducts peer cross training to assure Department talent resiliency.
  • Responsible for vendor sourced information cost containment, supporting the migration from print to electronic resources and consolidation of information resources.
  • Participates in, or leads, vendor information resources and technology evaluations, providing analysis to Department leadership.
  • Supports the implementation of client supporting and Department utilized technologies and information resources.
  • Supports information access and decision making tools analysis, design, implementation and support initiatives of the Firm’s Knowledge Management Department.
  • Works with the Department’s Technical Services to budget and manage spending on an ongoing basis and assist in the preparation of annual budgets.
  • Logs research and other productive time in the Firm’s resource tracking system.
  • Develops and maintains documentation of key job functions and processes.
  • Other duties as may be assigned to fully meet the requirements of the position.
  • Experience & Qualifications

    • 4+ years of research and analysis experience in a large law firm, professional services or corporate law firm research environment.
    • Legal matter, competitive and business intelligence research and analysis experience desired (with strength in at least one).
    • Writing skills and digital documents tools experience in producing professionally structured research summaries, abstracts and analysis documents for internal clients.
    • Experience working in both self-directed and team collaboration work, set in geographically disbursed, multi time zone, co-worker and client organizations.
    • Masters of Library Science degree, MBA or J.D., or equivalent professional experience.
    • Excellent oral and written communications skills, with internal clients and peer group.
    • Experience creating course materials, reference guides and effectively instructing professionals in access and use of electronic research resources.
    • Strong work organization, prioritization, multi-tasking and time-management skills.
    • Flexibly adjusts to changes in internal client research workloads, priorities and deadlines.
    • Strong client and team interpersonal and consensus generating collaboration skills.
    • Ability to work effectively as a team member and informal leader in dynamically aligning research talent to variable research services requests.
    • Experience with tax, corporate and capital markets practices, and proficiency in online platforms such as Intelligize, Bloomberg Professional, RIA Checkpoint, Capital IQ, the Deal, Lexis Security Mosaic and CCH IntelliConnect desired.
    • Knowledge of standard research resources such as Practical Law, Lexis, Westlaw and Thomson Reuters services and related end user technology tools.
