Supervisory Librarian, Maritime Administration – NY

This position is located in the Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration, U. S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Schuyler Bland Memorial Library, Kings Point, New York.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • You must be a U.S. citizen & meet specialized experience to qualify.
The ideal candidate will possess experience supervising a library staff, planning and administering all library policies, programs, procedures and services including collection development, budget preparation, reader services, technical services and special programs to assist college students in an academic library.

DUTIES:

As a Supervisory Librarian you will:
  • Serve as Chief Librarian at the United States Merchant Marine Academy’s Schuyler Bland Memorial Library including responsibility for planning and implementing the necessary programs and procedures to provide a complete library service.
  • Provide general supervision and direction of the professional and non-professional library personnel to ensure proper selection and acquisition of materials.
  • Plan and direct the development of general and special collections including electronic reference resources, books, periodicals, sea charts, magazines. Prepares and justifies the annual library budget and administers the library fiscal spending plan.
  • Provide appropriate management and leadership in developing and maintaining a professional and productive library work force capable of extending quality services required for support of the Academy program.
  • Confer with faculty, midshipmen and administrative staff in order to keep informed concerning the content, scope and direction of the Academy’s mission and curriculum.

    QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    You must meet the specialized experience qualifications for the GS-13;
    At least 1 year of experience as a Librarian managing major functions of a library in a college or university or comparable organization engaged in information literacy and research.
    Major functions may include: planning and administering all library policies, programs, procedures and services including collection development, budget preparation, reader services and experience with technology in library services and with promoting information literacy.
    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
