Scholarly Content Editor & Researcher, Newstex – virtual

Newstex is looking for an energetic, self-directed individual, with academic experience (graduate student, librarian, freelance resarcher) to join our Scoloarly Content Acquisition Team.  This is a part-time, paid hourly, position and ideal for librarians, library school students, or graduate students with a few hours to spare each week to help us with our Internet-based research.  We will also consider applicants who have recently left academia for non-professional reasons, such as retirement, family, relocation, etc.

In this role, you will be responsible for the following:
  • Identify authors and content on the Internet appropriate for the academic market, our editors will provide the criteria;
  • Code the content with subject categories (Library of Congress classifications), country and language codes;
  • Review all submissions from our team of freelance contributors;
  • Proactively identify subject areas that need more content and research and locate additional authors and content;
  • Proactively engage with scholarly authors via email, social networking, and phone to verify content if necessary;
  • Participate in reviews of your work with the management team;
  • Manage the transfer of the author’s publication(s) to the implementation team in a timely and coordinated manner;
  • Report weekly on completed work and work in progress against goals set;
  • Attend by phone and/or Internet, selected staff meetings, as required.
Requirements:
  • Strong academic background;
  • Subject expertise and demonstrable understanding of the academic market, the professional motivations and concerns of authors in academia, and subject matter expertise in academic publishing;
  • Knowledgeable about the Internet and scholarly publications;
  • Passionate about, and experienced in, the professional use of blogs, social media, and online video in scholarly communication;
  • Ability to assess the writing quality of others;
  • Fast reader;
  • Must be organized; detail-oriented, and able to handle mulltiple tasks simultaneously;
  • Applicants must use their own hardware (computer, telephone, Internet connection, etc.). Internal and external communications are through Newstex proprietary systems and Google productivity tools, which will be provided;
    • Independent worker who requires minimum daily supervision; and
    • Minimum time committment of 20 hours per week.
