Senior Technical Manager, New York University

NYU Libraries Information Technology Services is seeking a Senior Technical Manager. The Senior Technical Manager for Emerging Information Technologies for Libraries Information Technology Services (LITS) reports to the Director of Libraries Information Technology Services and is a key member of the Libraries IT Services management team. The Senior Technical Manager will also serve as a project coordinator on selected minor projects and project manager on larger IT projects that involve IT staff and other departments in the Division of Libraries.The Senior Technical Manager will  manage special projects involving data gathering, analysis and research on current and emerging Library discovery systems and the technologies that support them, technology tools and solutions relevant to supporting the operations and functions of a large academic research library. In close collaboration with managers and supervisors in LITS the Senior Technical Manager will be responsible to document and analyze current operational workflow and processes of LITS services and to initiate business and technology process improvement in Libraries IT services units. These activities will support the creation and development of a strategic planning roadmap for LITS and its operations and services.

Qualifications/Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Technology Management or related field.


Preferred Education:
Master’s Degree in Information Technology/Library Science/Technology Management/Business Administration/Computer Science.


Required Experience:
Min 5 years experience working in an IT position at a business or university either in Information Technology, Library or Digital Library technology. Demonstrated experience and understanding of information technology and its utilization in higher education and academic libraries. Experience in a minimum of three of the following areas: desktop management/support, application hardware/software, remote access technologies, statistical/ operations analysis, user/project management/client services/ web services/digital library services/programming, database systems/supervising IT units or services, libraries technology services, etc.


Preferred Experience:
Project management experience in an information technology department in an academic library in a large or mid-size university or similar experience in an IT department of a mid to large size college or university and/or supervision of IT staff.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: (include unique competencies, certification, licenses, etc.):
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated project management experience. Excellent problem solving and analytical skills in order to detail/document IT workflow requirements and define scope of IT/business issue(s) and articulate potential solutions. Strong organizational and leadership skills needed to collaborate and influence skilled IT professionals and navigate through the procedures and operational policies of a large academic research library. Knowledge of library systems and emerging technologies that are especially relevant to the operation and mission of academic libraries and those who use them. Familiarity with network systems, internet/web services, library systems, electronic mail systems, helpdesk systems and PC/MAC desktop applications (MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, common statistical programs, etc.). Ability to create and document specifications, develop flow charts/diagrams based on design specifications and business/IT process engineering. Making presentations to small groups, organizing and leading meetings and managing multiple competing projects and tasks will also be common.


Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: (include unique competencies, certification, licenses, etc.):
Working knowledge in several of the following areas: Windows/MAC/UNIX platforms, web technologies (Ruby, HTML, Java, PHP, MySQL), mobile technologies, systems administration (Linux/Red Hat), business intelligence tools, Agile development framework, data analysis, client services functionality or business process engineering.
