Strategic Programs Specialist, Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO)


Metropolitan New York Library Council is seeking  The Strategic Programs Specialist,  a three-year, full-time, newly-created position running from date-of-hire through December 2016. This position is open to both new and experienced information professionals interested in supporting libraries, archives, and cultural heritage through a variety of programs, services, and new initiatives. The position’s main responsibility will be as day-to-day manager of METRO’s National Digital Stewardship Residency in New York (NDSR-NY) program, an expansion of the NDSR program launched by the Library of Congress and Institute of Museum and Library Services in 2012.

If you fill this position, you will be asked to:
  • Handle day-to-day management of the NDSR-NY program (50% of time)
    • Serve as a point-of-contact for host institutions and NDSR residents and liaise with Library of Congress and NDSR-Boston program staff.
    • Contribute to project outcomes, communications, evaluations, and grant reporting.
    • Plan and organize NDSR-affiliated events, meetings, and workshops.
    • Support the program’s web presence and online platforms.
  • Contribute to other METRO strategic initiatives (50% of time)
    • Work on METRO’s Keeping Collections program providing training, consultations, and services to local archives and collecting institutions.
    • Help conceive and implement new member services and collaborative projects for libraries, archives, and cultural institutions in the METRO membership.
    • Contribute to planning workshops and special events in support of the professional development of librarians, archivists, and information professionals.
 The ideal candidate will have:
  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or a related Master’s degree.
  • Professional or internship experience working in a library, archive, or cultural heritage organization or affiliated non-profit or professional organization.
  • Experience with digital projects and knowledge of trends and best practices in the fields of digital stewardship and digital preservation.
  • Knowledge of current technologies and metadata standards in libraries and archives.
  • Experience with all or some of the following: project management, grant writing and reporting, and special event planning.
  • The ability to write for a variety of platforms and communicate with diverse audiences.
  • Facility with contemporary computing systems and relevant software and applications.
  • Ability to represent METRO at local and national conferences and professional events.
Position Details:

The position runs through December 31, 2016 and reports to METRO’s Strategic Initiatives Manager. The salary range is $50,000-$60,000 commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits, pension, and leave package. The job title is negotiable. The position may entail a 4-day, 35-hour work week. METRO’s offices are located at 57 E. 11th Street in New York City.
