Cataloging Coordinator, Cataloging, BookOps – NY

BookOps , a fully consolidated, shared library technical services organization that serves the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) and the New York Public Library (NYPL), and is jointly governed and funded by NYPL and BPL. BookOps is looking for a cataloging Coordinator at its Long Island City location.Under the direction of the Assistant Director for Cataloging, the Cataloging Coordinator:
  • Leads and evaluates cataloging activities for the BookOps member libraries
  • Manages all aspects of the cataloging process of published materials* within this area for the BookOps member libraries, including record creation, maintenance, and managing of external support services Analyzes workflow, establishes productivity standards, and utilizes metrics to capture staff and vendor database maintenance activities
      • *Exclusive of NYPL special formats, manuscripts, archives, rare books, or other non-published materials entering the Research collections outside of BookOps jurisdiction, except in an advisory or training capacity
      • *Exclusive of Brooklyn Public Library’s Brooklyn Collection
    • Coordinates NYPL Research cataloging priorities in collaboration with NYPL Collections Strategy and the BookOps NYPL Research Technical Services Coordinator
    • Identifies system enhancements that improve database maintenance,  implements new initiatives that effectively utilize technology and value-added services to provide efficient and cost-effective service and access
    • As invited, participates in the planning, decision making and implementation of BookOps members’ library policies around cataloging issues
    • Participates in BookOps member libraries’ staff training related to cataloging activities
    • Maintains and coordinates contact with BookOps member libraries’ Collection Liaisons and regular staff on issues or needs pertaining to cataloging
    • In conjunction with colleagues from BookOps Selection and Acquisitions Units, and/or member libraries’ Collection Liaisons, reviews and recommends licenses and/or contracts with materials vendors and publishers for the cataloging of library materials in all formats or related services
    • Keeps abreast with current trends, emerging technologies, issues and research in library cataloging.
    • Represents BookOps, and by extension, BookOps member libraries, in professional and public forums
    • Documents and implements procedures and instructions for cataloging workflows
    • Maintains statistics and produces reports

      Qualifications:
      • ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies with relevant professional experience
      • Extensive knowledge of Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, RDA, Library of Congress Name and Subject Headings, Library classification systems, MARC and other data formats, as well as OCLC classification policies and procedures
      • Thorough knowledge of national standards and emerging trends in cataloging and classification policy
      • Strong knowledge of automated processes relevant to cataloging including indexing structures, record manipulation, display issues and the import and export of records; experience with a Millenium Integrated Library System preferred
      • 2 years or more of progressively responsible cataloging or database maintenance experience including successfully demonstrating experience managing or assisting in such activities in a large, complex library
      • 2-4 years successfully demonstrated administrative and supervisory experience
      • Knowledge of integrated library systems and statistical analysis
      • Understanding of typical collection development, acquisitions, and processing practices of a large library
      • Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages preferred
      • Demonstrated flexibility, reliability, punctuality and attention to detail
      • Experience in designing or updating workflows to incorporate new technologies or shifts in cataloging priorities
